Global portrait of compost research
Article Abstract:
Scientists are continuously experimenting on new uses of compost. In Italy, growing media mixed with bark and biosolid composts improves nutrition for plants, better growth and qualitative and quantitative production characteristics compared to growing media of peat mixtures. In England, where paper pulp sludge are being developed for land applications, ways are being developed to improve nutrient content of sludge compost while shortening composting time by 50 days. In Spain, compost mixtures are found to reduce instances of root-knot nematodes in tomato and pepper crops.

Use of MSW compost in commercial sod production
Article Abstract:
Municipal solid waste (MSW) compost can be used to produce sod and turfgrass without the risk of soil contamination from the compost's high metal, glass and plastic content. A study site in Long Island, NY, was divided in two areas which were covered with MSW compost and a mixture of MSW compost and biosolids, and then seeded with bluegrass. When the sod was harvested after 18 months, the soil's metal had increased but only remained on the top 5 centimeters of the soil. The sod that was harvested was pronounced to be of marketable quality.
