Setting up a composting trial
Article Abstract:
Lompoc Cafe was set up in Maine in 1989, and the Mount Desert Island venture found that its home brew was selling well enough for this activity to be expanded. A composting facility has been set up to deal with the spent grain using a method to minimize odors. Windrows have been used that are passively aerated. Horse bedding and grains were found to be a good mix in a trial project. Other types of mix, such as leaves and grain did not perform as well, and goat bedding is to be used in a later trial.

Com-postal-ing in Texas
Article Abstract:
Undeliverable bulk business mail from the Postal Service's offices in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Texas is cocomposted with other feedstocks. The agency contracted Silver Creek Materials Inc to do the composting job. The company uses a windrow turner to aerate and chip the paper into smaller pieces. This process serves to increase the paper's surface area for better microbial degradation. The Postal Service is satisfied with the quality of compost produced by Silver Creek Materials.
