Iowa targets organics to meet recycling goals
Article Abstract:
Fifty percent reduction of solid waste products by the year 2000 will involve composting. Composting of organics other than yard waste, development of better infrastructure for construction and demolition waste and increasing industry participation in recycling are being targeted. Relatively homogeneous loads of food residuals from the landfill to the composting site is being done. Residuals are being accepted from grocery shops, restaurants and fast food businesses. Creation and maintenance of partnerships is important to make such programs successful.

Have fun, recycle 90 percent
Article Abstract:
Organizers of the annual Denver's Cherry Creek Arts Festival, held every Jul. 4, have developed a solid waste management strategy that enables them to recycle 90% of all wastes. The strategy involves encouraging attendees to sort their own garbage and deposit them at 210 collection sites. The organizers have established markets for their recyclables by developing close working relationships with local recyclers and end-users.

Advanced designs for constructed wetlands
Article Abstract:
New strategies are examined for improving the efficiency and results of constructed wetlands. These include forced bed aeration, which raises oxygen transfer levels via direct injections of air bubbles; a reciprocating bed, which involves pumping wastewater back and forth between two gravel-filled cells; and vertical flow, which uses vegetation in gravel beds for denitrification.
