Keeping the Defense Department out of the landfill
Article Abstract:
The Defense Distribution Depot Susquehanna Pennsylvania is run by the U.S. Department of Defense and has adopted a wood recovery system in response to the National Performance Review. The specifications for a 100% recycled content box for military purposes have been established. Reusable pallets are repaired at the Wood Recycling Center, New Cumberland, and the unrepairable pallets are recycled. The Recycling Team buys recycled products and is testing ways to use non-wood solid wastes. It is conducting a pilot composting program to use waste wood in restaurants.

Mulch at core of wood residuals use
Article Abstract:
US companies which generate wood residuals, such as pulp and paper concerns, are seeing particularly strong demand for wood mulches. This trend is encouraging a large number of independent companies to begin purchasing wood residuals to process into wood mulches. It is hard to estimate the value of the wood mulch market, as it is extremely fragmented. However, it is believed to be between $300 million and $400 million a year. Independent operators include Mulch Masters Inc., which obtains most of its raw product from northern Florida and southern Georgia.

Wood residuals find big uses in small pieces
Article Abstract:
Wood residuals are used in the production of engineered wood, such as particle board and medium density fibreboard, hardboard, and insulation board. The pulp and paper industry is the largest user of residual wood. Wood residue is used as a filler in numerous plastic products. Fuel pellets of wood residue are available in the market for use in specially designed pellet stoves. Untreated wood from pellets and dimensional lumber are likely to contain less potential contaminants, than urban wood. This helps in preventing defects in the finished products.
