Lessons learned from home composting: Years of experience in Wisconsin with backyard programs provide insights on best ways to get residents involved for the long-term
Article Abstract:
Wisconsin initiated home composting programmes nine years ago and results of the source reduction initiative are now becoming apparent. Guidelines to developing potential diversion rates are presented, based on experiences in Wisconsin. A survey of backyard composting education programs was undertaken and the most effective outreach component was found to be subsidized bin distribution. A successful program requires education and outreach components, together with promotion and publicity, as well as financial incentives and policies.

Food residuals diversion in Florida
Article Abstract:
Florida generates huge amounts of food residuals, but they have not been widely targeted as a recoverable resource. The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) and Florida Organic Recyclers Association (FORA) undertook an education and market development program with the aim of identifying major food residuals generators, develop educational brochures, and recycling workshops. A review of food residuals generation and recovery in the state is provided.
