Managing solid wastes in marginal areas
Article Abstract:
The Lima Mission of the Agency for International Development is currently implementing a low cost solid waste management program to decrease the number of uncollected solid wastes in marginal areas. The two-year program includes the establishment of microenterprises for waste disposal. Comprehensive training and education programs and medical waste collection programs will be implemented. Surveys already conducted indicate that residents favor waste collection thrice weekly and confirm their interest to participate in a source separation system.

Voila! From refuse container to composting bin
Article Abstract:
The nonrecyclable old refuse containers which were no longer being used in Chandler, Arizona, are being converted into backyard composting bins. Almost 2,500 composting containers have been made available, free of cost to the residents since Oct 1992. Nearly 1,700 tons of yard trimmings have been converted to soil amendment using these composting bins. Workshops are conducted to educate the residents on recycling. Composters have been included in the staff of two schools to educate the students about the environment.
