New solutions for poultry manure

Article Abstract:

Daylay Egg Farms in Ohio produces some 90,000 tons of manure from the laying operations and 20,000 tons from the pullet operations yearly. The company has incorporated composting in its operations in 1989 to take care of the growing waste problem. There are conveyor belts from the poultry house leading to the composting facility where much of the composting-related processes are automated. The company utilizes only 8% of the produced compost and sells the rest to farmers in the area. Another potential market the company is targeting is the turf grass industry.

Regulators tackle manure management

Article Abstract:

It is estimated that animal feeding operations in the US generate more than 300 million tons of manure each year, of which between 90% and 95% is land applied. Research indicates that, in many cases, the manure is not properly applied. Dairy farmers, for example, often spread manure daily, rather than storing it for use in spring and autumn. Regulators are now looking closely at animal feeding operations, considering issues including protecting the quality of the water supply.
