Newer approaches to lower program costs
Article Abstract:
The local governments in the US have instituted measures to reduce recycling costs through community involvement in an effort to counter criticisms leveled at curbside recycling. Such programs include maximizing service collection and delivery as well as introduction of an integrated collection scheme wherein trucks which function both as compactors and recycling vehicles are used. Other cities such as New York and Philadelphia reduced service collection in response to low participation in curbside recycling. New strategies in wet/dry recycling systems are expected developments in the future.

White House summit and other bits
Article Abstract:
The planned recycling summit at the White House can be exploited by the Clinton administration which prides itself as being pro-business and pro-environment. There has been no appreciable leadership initiative from the White House regarding solid waste recycling and this summit can be taken as an opportunity to establish and promote a development plan for solid waste management. Important issues that must be addressed are the steps the federal government should take to reduce solid waste.

Designers realize that once is not enough
Article Abstract:
It is increasingly important to design cost effective recycling processes to manage huge quantities of waste products created by society. The International Design Resource Awards programme challenges designers to innovate in remanufacturing design. Remanufacturing technologies must cater for disassembly and recycling to be of real use in modern times.
