Organics recycling takes big chunk out of solid waste
Article Abstract:
Wood, food residuals and yard trimmings represent 28-30% of the MSW stream, and state disposal bans have been effective in getting many yard trimmings composting programs started. New Jersey was the first state to initiate a ban in 1987, and last year its is estimated that 1,447,000 tons of yard trimmings were recovered, with around 90% composted at 171 facilities. South Carolina is also relying more on composting to manage yard trimmings, and in Maryland just under 300,000 tons of yard trimmings were composted. New Jersey reported 297,000 tons of food residuals recovery in 1997, while Maryland diverted 147,000 tons.

Building a compost business: a nursery moves big time into organics recycling
Article Abstract:
The Barnes Nursery of Huron in Ohio is processing organic wastes into composts and turning it into a lucrative business. Composting operations which began in 1991 take profit only through the company's landscaping jobs. Now that the market has improved, its product sells mostly to landscape contractors and garden centers. Also, the company is initiating a program of soil remediation and research on other possible combination of components such as sand/compost/tire to be used for the sports turf industry.

Blends boost composters' market options - and profits
Article Abstract:
New benefits of composts are continually being discovered, and blending compost with other materials has opened up new markets. Blenders are moving from using peat to compost in soil mixes, as native peat becomes scarce and more expensive. Compost can lead to a better product, and important considerations are particle size and moisture content.
