Property rights and entrepreneurial income in commercial fisheries
Article Abstract:
The political and economic aspects of owning and operating fishing vessels in an open access fishery are explored. To this end, a model which treats fishing vessel owners as heterogeneous with respect to their fishing catch within and outside the fishery, respectively, is developed. It reveals the positive effect of self-financed quota reductions and quota buybacks on their income as well as the negative effect of Pigouvia taxes on landings and conversion of such fisheries to sole ownership.
