Protecting city water on the farm
Article Abstract:
The Watershed Agricultural Council is a voluntary organization aimed at improving farm management and being cost effectively protecting the New York City (NYC) water supply located in upstate New York. The project was developed because local farmers wanted locally managed programs instead of regulations. The program involves the evolving Whole Farm Planning/Best Management Approach and developing 10 demonstration projects. The Department of Environmental Protection in NYC is monitoring the project. Municipalities in other towns are following this example to protect water supplies.

The logistics of moving feedstocks to farms
Article Abstract:
The Assn for Resource Conservation (ARC) is a nonprofit waste reduction group in Centerport, NY. ARC has been providing wood trimmings and food processing residuals to eastern Long Island farmers since 1993. ARC's main problem has been convincing haulers to transport the organics to the farms instead of to municipal incinerators. Municipalities are offering incentives to haulers to bring feedstocks to incinerators to prevent them from going out of state.
