Recovered paper price volatility: how can we do business this way?

Article Abstract:

The recovered paper industry is far from achieving more stable market prices because of several factors inherent in its structure. Like other commodities, recovered paper is subject to supply and demand fluctuations, making it vulnerable to price volatility. Other mechanisms and business structures that harbor the potential to provide some price stability include e-commerce transactions, trends in sales agreements, financial derivatives and real time market price information.

World recovered paper outlook: worldwide demand

Article Abstract:

Market conditions for recovered paper are expected to eventually become firmer because of stronger paper and board demand conditions in 2000, with the most gain expected to occur in Asia and Latin America. While markets in Europe and North America remain sluggish, strong growth is expected in the recycled-based capacity for Western Europe newsprint and North American tissue grades and this growth will be reflected in an increase in the rate of recovered paper usage.

The use of recovered paper by mills worldwide will continue to increase in an unmistakable trend. Moore and Assoc's official, annual forecast report for major grades of recovered paper reflect the growing significance of recovery cost on future prices of the different grades of recovered paper. The paper industry's challenge will be to optimize collection, intermediate processing and stock preparation to provide a cost effective source of pulp.
