Decentralizing the solid waste industry: At a time when giant corporations are consolidating and recycling collection, a tiny Vermont company shows there's another way

Article Abstract:

The village of Bristol, Vermont started to offer its residents free recycling collection in 1991. Containers are not provided, but the town has used a sticker system for several years, and a wagon pulled by two draft horses collects trash and recyclables. A baler for recyclables has recently been purchased, and the recyclables are sold, with the village retaining half of any profits above hauling and processing costs.
