The article examines Iowa's processes for converting compost and other organic wastes into renewable energy such as methane and ethanol, along with an overview on legislation supporting these processes. The state's farm, dairy and livestock industries play key roles in producing animal manure for source material.

Landfill wins with composting/wood recycling
Article Abstract:
The article evaluates the impact of Iowa's 1989 Waste Reduction and Recycling Act and the concurrent construction of several small- and large-scale composting plants. To date, the facilities have directed almost 350,000 tons of organic wastes away from state landfills.

The largest permitted vermicomposters in Iowa
Article Abstract:
An overview is presented on earthworm culture at an Iowa farm. The farm, which also provides a manure management service to local livestock breeders, uses its food residuals waste collection as feedstock for the worms, which produce vermicompost that can be marketed.
