Regulatory initiatives at the provincial level
Article Abstract:
Canada's plans of implementing a 50% waste diversion goal have spurred a host of provincial regulatory initiatives. So far, the most extensive law was passed in Ontario in 1988. Known as Bill 143, the law mandated curbside recycling and backyard composting programs for most of its residents. Among the more recent laws include a two-cent levy on beverage containers in Manitoba, the establishment of regional solid waste commissions in New Brunswick and the implementation of a three-stream collection system in Prince Edward Island.

Going beyond PET and HDPE
Article Abstract:
Two demonstration projects in Brampton and Mississauga, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and one in Lane County, Oregon, US, focus on tapping the market potential for recovered postconsumer market products. The three projects aim at expanding the market from the existing recovery of polyethylene terephthalate and high density polyethylene. The projects are successfully targeting a range of plastics upon employing efficient sorting systems and with the help of external financial aid.

The state of garbage in Canada
Article Abstract:
The 1997 State of Garbage in Canada survey indicates that recycling rate, including composting, reached 23% while waste generation nationwide was at 25.1 million metric tons. Curbside recycling programs rose from 1,217 in 1996 to 1,400 in 1997. Some provinces encountered problems in compiling, analyzing and sharing information about their waste management systems. The increase in recycling rate has been attributed to better accounting and expansion of waste programs.
