Rising fuel costs: who's paying?
Article Abstract:
A discussion on the effect of higher fuel prices on the operations of the scrap processing industry and observations from the trucking, rail and barge operations and recyclers is presented. Trucking firms are being hard hit by rising fuel costs and the shortage of drivers. They have tried to compensate by increasing their rates from 4% to 7%. Railroad officials cannot say whether higher fuel prices have caused their load from recyclers to increase because their shipments of steel have also increased. Recyclers, for their part are experiencing a 30% trucking surcharge.
