Sloppy reporting and recycling policy
Article Abstract:
Reports on recycling appearing in prominent magazines of New York City present a negative view leading to unfavorable opinions about recycling amongst the people and politicians. The Mayor has decided to reduce recycling services on the basis of such articles. The Environmental Defense Fund report shows that recycling of paper uses more water than production of new paper, but it is environmentally better. Shifting to a recovery based system from a disposal based system is difficult but involves rewards, reduced costs, and increased economic development opportunities.

Happy ending to Snow White story
Article Abstract:
A few media people have been disputing the cost-effectiveness of recycling efforts. In the Feb 19, 1991 issue of USA Today, anti-recycling proponent Lynn Scarlet questioned the notion of using precious taxes on recycling wastes despite the availability of adequate landfills. Forbes magazine and Wall Street Journal columnists Marcia Berss and Clark Wiseman, respectively, viewed economics as their primary reason for taking their stand on the issue. It is hoped that recycling efforts will progress despite negative feedback from the media.

Article Abstract:
New York City, NY, faces a serious waste disposal problem. It is expected that the Fresh Kills landfill will be closed shortly, and there is no suitable land for new landfills in the area. Recycling has been attempted, but the results have not all been positive. The experiences of New York City indicate that large cities around the world must ensure that all citizens are actively involved in recycling. All cities should have a team of recycling coordinators, and recovery must be funded with a dedicated budget.
