Solid waste composting plants face the challenges
Article Abstract:
The 1992 FacilityUpdate indicates that there are presently 21 facilities composting municipal solid waste, majority of which are processing a mixed waste stream. Facility descriptions reveal that the plants are encountering numerous challenges that include availability of enough space for optimum composting, odor control, contaminants in the finished product, equipment performance and market introduction. Some plants are reportedly achieving success in marketing some ofthe produced compost and all are currently addressing operational problems thathave badly affected the quality of the finished product.

Biosolids management update
Article Abstract:
BioCycle magazine has conducted a survey on a state-by-state biosolids management and generation, including the number of wastewater treatment plants in each state. The survey was based on EPA's 40 CFR Part 503 biosolids management regulations which was promulgated in 1993. The results indicate that 13 out of 36 responding states are more restrictive with some metals while 32 reported similar limits as Part 503. No state reported having more stringent requirements for pathogen and vector attraction reduction.

Yard trimmings composting trends
Article Abstract:
There has been an increase in the number of sites in the US that compost yard trimmings, to over 3,800 in 1999 from 651 in 1988. A survey carried out in 1999 has examined small and large public sites, as well as private sites. Windrows are used by most sites in dealing with yard trimmings, and they vary in terms of turning methods. Retail sales to private individuals are seen as lucrative, with landscapers, nurseries, and soil blenders also providing a market for the compost.
