Supporting scavenger co-ops
Article Abstract:
The Fundacion Social (FS) is a Columbian non-governmental organization that helps scavengers form cooperatives, thereby lessening dependence on middlemen for markets while creating better compensations for scavengers. The FS also gives legal, administrative, technical and financial support to cooperatives such as the Bogota Association of Recyclers and National Recycling Program cooperative members. Meanwhile, the Columbian government does little to help scavenger cooperatives, with local authorities still contracting services of bigger companies in recycling municipal wastes.

Scavenger cooperatives in developing countries
Article Abstract:
Developing countries depend largely on human scavengers for their recycling requirements. These scavengers collect materials from waste and, in Africa, Asian and Latin American cities, it has been estimated that as much as 2% of the populace rely on recovering recyclable materials either to sell or to use for their survival. Programs to organize scavenger cooperatives in Asia and Latin America are common. By organizing these people, the programs aim to help them circumvent middlemen and break their vicious cycle of poverty.
