Turkey manure becomes feedstock for fertilizer
Article Abstract:
The desire to develop a product which can be sold in specialty markets inspired Holden Farms to form its own fertilizer company named Sustane Corp. Composting operations were initially done by Holden Farms. The resulting turkey manure compost was sold to local farmers and to landscapers. However, a proposal to use the compost as a feedstock for organic fertilizer motivated the establishment of Sustane in 1987. Composting operations were turned over to the new company and a fertilizer plant was constructed in Cannon Falls, MN.

State fertilizer officials focus on compost
Article Abstract:
The US Composting Council and the American Association of Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO) have been collaborating to create a uniform compost bill. Once made law, the bill would enable the registration of compost products across a variety of states. It is hoped that the bill will help regulate the content of heavy metals in inorganic fertilizers and also recognise the nutritional value of compost.

Biosolids cut fertilizer costs by $200 an acre
Article Abstract:
South Bend, IN, decided to beneficially manage biosolids generated in its wastewater treatment plant in 1989. To meet the city's annual biosolids production needs, program administrators got a commitment from local farmers to increase crop acreage. At the same time, farmers were contacted so that they could avail of the cost savings that can be generated from the use of biosolids as fertilizer.
