University and company team up for composting and recycling
Article Abstract:
Sodexho Marriott Services has been operating a campus recycling and composting programme at New Mexico State University since Jul 1994. This programme, known as Aggie Recycling, replaced a system in which the university depended on volunteers to collect recylables. The university and the company split the $80,000 cost of constructing the recycling facility, which was completed in summer 1996. The programme began with upgrading paper and cardboard recovery, placing bins in areas with high volumes of paper. Recycled paper collection has now reached around 16 tons every three weeks.

Composting for erosion control in Texas
Article Abstract:
Officials from Lubbock, Texas, have set up a composting operation using woody material and other feedstocks. The initial aim was to use the material as cover at a landfill, but it was seen as too porous, so was composted. Leachate is not a problem due to lack of rainfall. There are sometimes problems with inappropriate material being included in the feedstock. There are a number of applications for the compost produced, such as erosion control.
