When things go wrong at the compost site
Article Abstract:
The Spokane, Washington Regional Solid Waste System faced opposition from the local public during the establishment of its compositing site on the grounds of noise and traffic. Experienced staff, a detailed start-up plan and a ready source of carbon are essential to avoid problems. Undersized equipment should not be bought, the initial implementation needs to be slow and operating contracts require good contracting language. An odor control misting system has been set up, an inventory of spare parts is kept and the windrows are small with a high carbon to nitrogen ratio.

Energy and compost: extracting heat from in-vessel system
Article Abstract:
The waste recycling plant in Jutland was designed not only to process different liquid and solid wastes into compost but also to generate energy from the composting process. The compost plant utilizes a fully-automated, agitated plug-flow, in-vessel composting system which processes organic materials through a feeding zone, an aerated composting zone and an exit zone. Heat is removed from composting by means of a heat exchange system.
