Work continues on public health issues
Article Abstract:
A study conducted in Illinois shows that bioaerosols emitted during composting operations pose no health hazard. The emitted bioaerosols hardly show any raise in off-set levels, and the spore concentration is same as that in communities with no composting facility. The findings have not been accepted by all the public, and the methodology for the study has been criticized. The Ad Hoc Compost Community recommends surface improvement at composting sites and long-term relocation of the operations. Public policy on such issues should be based on scientific evidence.

Half empty or half full?
Article Abstract:
Evaluation of curbside yard trimmings highlight the demand created for backyard management of yard trimmings. The Composting Council has established the National Backyard Composting Program with external aid to cater to this demand through local backyard composting education programs. The Council aims to facilitate organics recovery in the community and in the commercial food and paper sectors, thereby enhancing organics diversion and recycling.

Sharpening the image of soil organics
Article Abstract:
The image of composting as an integral part of sustainable development needs to be advocated as compost has many environmental uses. It can suppress soil borne diseases in chile crops. Explosive contaminated soil and surface mining sites can be restored by compost and used for traditional purposes. The ecology of soil organics requires attention and the restoration of soil organics needs to be a national policy.
