World's first automobile disassembly plant
Article Abstract:
The world's first automobile disassembly plant began operations at the Volkswagen-Evert Heeren pilot plant in Leer, Germany, in Apr 1990. The project aims to develop reuses for difficult-to-recycle car components such as plastics and automotive fluids. Recycling of engines and gearboxes, on the other hand, has been going on since 1947. Based on experiences in the plant, car designs are proposed to facilitate disassembly and recycling. Financial prospects for recycling need to be improved, but progress is expected because of the thrust to make recycled parts a common feature of new cars.

Beneficial use program for New York City's sludge
Article Abstract:
New York City has shifted its disposal of treated sewage sludge from ocean dumping to land-based use methods. Proposals for land-based replacement of city sewage sludge from possible contractors were evaluated based on price, technical feasibility, and preferences for beneficial use. Out of eighty offers, three companies were chosen. Of particular interest is the project wherein a semi-arid Texas ranch will be subjected to sludge restoration projects. Plans involve re-transforming the ranch into a cattle industry site and a wildlife protectorate.

Fertilizing with cheese plant sludge
Article Abstract:
Beef and dairy cattle producers in southwestern Missouri have found an economical and environmentally sound method of fertilizing their pastures by using lime-stabilized sludge from cheese and dairy food factories. Three biological treatment plants were set up by the dairy cooperative Mid-America Dairymen Inc to handle cheesemaking waste and washdown water which would otherwise overload the region's sewage capacity. Research showed that the maximum yield of forage dry matter was achieved at sludge applications of 9,000 gallons per acre.
