Bobtown: the legacy of Robert Celestin
Article Abstract:
Bobtown, LA, is a roadside community of approximately 25 homes sitting on both sides of Highway 57. It is an hour's drive away New Orleans, LA. Bobtown sprang from Robert Celestin's family and property. Celestin was a black man with Indian ancestry who purchased part of the Wagguespack plantation in the late 1800's. He parceled his property among his children who also gave portions of their inheritance to their own children. The town grew to a unique clan home with village and family traditions independent of the plantation culture in most of Louisiana.
