An ex-centric approach to American cultural studies: the interesting case of Zora Neale Hurston as a noncanonical writer
Article Abstract:
Zora Neale Hurston's writings should be subjected to a self-aware historical reading in order to exclude her from one particular canon of writing. The canonical reading preserves the idea of a transcendent realm, and is likely to ignore Hurston's political views. Hurston's novels evoke an African-American culture that is flexible to provide an identity in a modern world. Hurston looked back to her people's rural folk root, instead of advocating the adaptation to a white, urban culture.

F.O. Matthiessen and the future of American Studies
Article Abstract:
F.O. Matthiessen's brand of criticism, combining his literary, political and religious opinion, has to be reinterpreted for the future strength of American Studies. The New Americanists dismissal of him comes from their ignoring the religious aspect of his ideology. Matthiessen's vision of a democratic community has special relevance in the post-Cold War era.
