Baba Ali Al-Shaikh Mahmud
Article Abstract:
The head of the leading Saiyid family of Kurdistan and the ruler of Sulaimani division of Iraqi Kurdistan passed away on Aug. 20, 1996. A member of the Royal Society for Asian Affairs since 1950, Baba Ali Al-Shaikh Mahmud declared himself King of Kurdistan in 1922, incurring the ire of the British mandatory authority and the Baghdad government. He was considered as the 'modernized son of Shaikh Mahmud Barzinji,' having been educated in America. During the Iraqi monarchy and the revolutionary regimes, he held a number of cabinet positions, such as Minister of Economics, Works, Communications and Agriculture.
