Rebecca Harding Davis's 1861 'Life in the Iron Mills' is awkwardly conceived and constructed, yet these flaws reflect the psychological damage inflicted on most women authors of this time. Davis created marginalized and deformed characters because she understood the opposite of romance was marginalization.
