Gaps in the narrative of the Hiss case
Article Abstract:
The celebrated espionage case against Albert Hiss remains as controversial in the 1990s as it was in the 1950s when the case became a symbol of America's worries about its national security at the height of the Cold War. Interest in the case has been stoked once more with the 1992 announcement by Stalin's biographer General Dmitri Volkogonov that he was unable to find any evidence to prove that Hiss had been a Soviet spy. An examination of the evidence against Hiss and a rereading of several notable books on the issue reveals new facets of the case that previously went unexplored.
