Henry James's 'The Bostonians': controlling Verena Tarrant
Article Abstract:
Henry James's novel 'The Bostonians' describes the struggle among Selah Tarrant, Olive Chancellor and Basil Ransom for control of Verena Tarrant. Verena's passivity is a reflection of the powerlessness of women in the 19th century as well as the training for submissiveness that still occurs in the 20th. Verena's father controls her by mesmerism while Olive Chancellor relies on emotional and financial control and Basil Ransom on seduction. Ransom's victory seems inevitable given the phallocentric nature of society.

The Bellegardes rejection of Newman and his continuing ease with himself simultaneously asserts the power of money and its limitations.
