The remarks of the Boston architect Herbert Langford Warren about the life in Europe are presented. The views expressed by Warren were very closer to those led by Boston architects and historians, and it provides divergent attitudes toward the architecture of the Italian Renaissance.

Minstrel-soldiers: the construction of African-American identity in the Union Army
Article Abstract:
Approximately 180,000 black men served in the Union Army and were crucial to Northern victory. Most blacks viewed military service as a means to social equality, and army culture began to regard the minstrel-soldier as an embodiment of national and military values.
