Press Freedom in Liberia, 1830-1847: the impact of heterogeneity and modernity
Article Abstract:
Two propositions by historian John D. Stevens on press freedom and culture were tested. Data were acquired from government press relations in Liberia, West Africa from 1830 to 1847. Importance of cross-national testing of propositions unique to certain periods and societies were emphasized. The need for greater attention to be paid to institutionalized values were suggested, confirming the utility of qualitative research in refining and operationalizing concepts.
