Service sector holding fast: Consumer confidence, plus government budgets, drive strategies

Article Abstract:

The service sector accounts for 35 percent of the firms on the Hispanic Business 500, with a wide range of professional services, for which consumer confidence and government budgets are important drivers of performance. Higher interest rates and energy prices, and slowdown in home refinancing are factors that may give some consumers reasons to constrain spending, while government deficits and inflation could also affect services.

Hitting the jackpot: Hispanic Scholarship Fund receives a $50 million frant from the Lilly Endowment

Article Abstract:

The president and CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Sara Martinez Tucker's efforts in presenting the looming crisis of lagging college education for Hispanics to the Lilly Endowment last year were recently rewarded. The endowment granted $50 million to the scholarship fund so that many more young people will be able to receive scholarships.

A capital question: Will public pension fund investments reach the intended destination?

A debate on whether Hispanic Public Pension Fund (PPF) managers could move more of this capital to Hispanic-owned businesses is presented. The challenges faced by Hispanic-owned companies while they look for capital and growth from private equity (PE) firms or PPF are discussed.
