Sir Gordon Coligny Whitteridge, KCMG, OBE, FSA

Article Abstract:

Sir Gordon Coligny Whitteridge, former ambassador to Burma and Afghanistan, and for many years a member of the Society, died recently at the age of 86. He was honored with KCMG, OBE, FSA by the Queen for his services. Sir Gordon was born in 1908 and was educated at Whitgift School and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. He entered the Siam Consular Service, first as a student interpreter and then from 1933 as vice-Consul. On retirement in 1968 Gordon remained as active as ever. Sir Gordon Whitteridge was a man of wide and varied interests.

Sir Arthur De la Mare, KCMG, KCVO

Article Abstract:

Sir Arthur De la Mare, one of the Foreign Office's most authoritative and experienced experts on Asia, who was also conferred with KCVO and KCMG by Queen Elizabeth, died recently. His was a career of great diversity and he was a man of strong likes and dislikes. He entered the Consular Service in 1936 and was posted to Japan. Sir Arthur played a critical role during the Second World War by becoming involved in propaganda broadcasts to Japan. As High Commissioner to Singapore, he established excellent relations with Lee Kuan Yew.

Sir Lionel Henry Lamb, KCMG, OBE, 1900-1992

Article Abstract:

Sir Lionel Lamb was born in Turkey of a British consul and an Italian mother. He attended Winchester, Oxford and London University. He served as vice-consul in Chengtu, China, and subsequently in Beijing, Harbin and Shanghai. After the World War II, he served in the US for two years before returning to China. He was Charges d'Affaires of the British Embassy in Beijing after the Communist takeover. He assumed the post of Ambassador to Bern before his resignation.
