The authenticity of American realism: Samuel Clemens and George Caleb Bingham 'On the River.'
Article Abstract:
Samuel Clemens in his writings and George Caleb Bingham in his paintings have realistically portrayed the Mississippi river life in 19th century America, but the authenticity of the works remains doubtful. Realism in the art of 19th century America implies a style of representation, instead of historical authority. Bingham and Clemens presented a picture of America, which catered to the culturally conditioned expectations of the world. Both the writer and painter portrayed America's self confidence, optimism and expansionism using strategies of tone, voice, angle of vision and immediacy.
