While the decade witnessed slowdowns with reference to an over-built real estate market, a series of Wall Street scandals, and decrease in the savings, it also witnessed positive trends like new business models, growing affluence of Hispanics, and steady progress in worker productivity driven by technological advances.

Unstable macro-economic conditions in the US resulted in the decline in revenues for the 500 largest Hispanic-owned companies in the US by 1.7 percent in 2002 to a total of $23.1 billion. Though retail and service sectors posted losses, the construction, automotive sales, and finance sectors showed the strongest growth by turning to technology and foreign markets during the slowdown in the US.
