New Congress sees Hispanics gaining influence

Nydia Velazquez, the first Hispanic woman to chair the House Small Business Committee of Congress in 1993 wants to make the committee act as a real advocate for small business. The committee's priorities include legislation to provide affordable health care for small-business owners and their employees, eliminating contract bundling and effectively pushing small businesses out of the competition.

Felix Sanchez, Jimmy Smits, Esai Morales and Sonia Braga founded the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts in 1997 to promote Hispanics in the media and entertainment industries. The nonprofit organization plus nine other groups have joined together to boycott the four major TV networks to protest the "brownout" of Hispanics in U.S. television.
