Alternatives to allowance

Article Abstract:

Although many specialists in family finance believe that an allowance is a good way for children to learn about the value of money, specialists in child development believe that children do not fully understand the concept of saving and spending carefully until they are 8 or 9. Alternatives to allowances include having a family money jar, giving money when it is appropriate, and letting children earn their money.

The introduction of state-sponsored college-saving programs seeks to provide another alternative for parents to prepare for the future college education of their children. However, parents must realize that such programs are relatively new and are still untried.
