The tragedy of Wuhan, 1938
Article Abstract:
The costly defense of Wuhan, known as Hangkou in the 1930s, by Chiang Kai-shek's forces transformed rural Chinese society with effects which are still celebrated in 1996. Wuhan was the capital of Nationalist China from January to October of 1938, when it fell to the Japanese. Chiang Kai-shek lost 80% of his officers in the siege, but rural Chinese ignored political and social differences between Nationalist and Communist forces to rally to the city's defense. Military action briefly became a socially unifying force.
