Children and adolescents discharged from public psychiatric hospitals: evaluation of outcome in a continuum of care
Article Abstract:
Study of 90 children and adolescents admitted in two-state-operated psychiatric hospitals in Virginia during hospitalization, three months after discharge and one year after discharge revealed that patients were emotionally and behaviorally disturbed and they were from poor families many of which were not intact. One-third of the children had placement difficulties during the three-month period after discharge though many of them received quality after care treatment. Placement instability increased at the one-year post-discharge follow-up. Family members' presence during the time of hospitalization and their involvement in treatment planning had positive effects on the treatment outcome.

Building a research base for community services for children and families: what we know and what we need to learn
Article Abstract:
There has been much research on different aspects of community-based health services which can be used for designing effective, innovative and community based treatment of disturbed children and adolescents but there remains a paucity of well designed studies. There remains a need to upgrade the community-based program to fully meet the needs of children. A historical perspective on the development of community services, promising service system developments and future research areas are discussed.

Crisis assessment and psychiatric hospitalization of children and adolescents in state custody
Article Abstract:
A group of children and adolescents who were in state custody and had been evaluated for a crisis assessment were investigated for clinical characteristics and placement decisions. Symptoms, risk factors, co-morbid variables and functioning were retrospectively reviewed using the Childhood Severity of Psychiatric Illness (CSPI) structured assessment tool. Results suggested that risk behaviours were important predictors of psychiatric hospitalization.
