Cultural diversity in the 21st century: beyond e pluribus unum
Article Abstract:
The trend of multiculturalism in the US is shifting focus from assimilation to ethnicity. While many white Americans fear a pluralistic multicultural society, people from other cultures view the American motto 'e pluribus unum' (one out of many) as oppressive. The fusion of other cultures into the dominant one may ignore the many in favor of the white American one. To bring about unity in diversity in the 21st century, the dominant culture must appreciate and celebrate cultural differences. Culture must be defined in broader terms and children must be taught to be multicultural.
