Family futures: possibilities, preferences and probabilities
Article Abstract:
Concepts and methodologies from futurist studies can be applied to family decision making and long term planning. A survey of couples in 1983 and again in 1989 explored planning attitudes, goal setting and gender role preferences. Using Russell Ackoff's planning attitude typology, a majority of both men and women indicated futuristic attitudes (interactivism and preactivism) and fewer held inactivist and reactivist attitudes. Also, 97% said that they had long term goals. Wives and husbands tended to have complementary desires for changes in gender roles, though most husbands disdain housework.

Young adults' marital and family attitudes: the role of recent parental divorce, and family and parental conflict
Article Abstract:
Parental conflict is the strongest predictor of young adults' marital and family attitudes, compared with family conflict and the marital status of parents. A comparison of the relative influence of these three factors on the marital and family attitudes of young adults showed unequal significance among the three. Parental conflict showed the most consistent and extensive influence, parents' marital status predicted two of the five attitudes while family conflict showed almost no influence.
