What Can We Do With Six Freeports?
Article Abstract:
Six experimental freeports are to be developed in the United Kingdom. The nature of freeports is often misunderstood. They are not places to buy inexpensive things and do not allow tariff advantages under European Economic Community rules. However, there are benefits to industry as a place where goods can be stored, tax-free, and distributed on demand (at which time they are taxed). The processing costs are lower. A major concern about success is that there may not be sufficient investment funds. Though the picture looks positive, there is also concern about the five-year test period as this may not be sufficient time.
