Historical changes and life course variation in the determinants of premarital childbearing
Article Abstract:
There are substantial effects of race and ethnicity, geographic location and family background on the likelihood that women will bear a child outside marriage, according to research into whether the effect of established sociodemographic determinants of the risk of a first premarital birth has altered over time or changes according to age. It was found that the deterrent effect of a high family income during childhood on the likelihood of a premarital birth drops substantially as women grow older. However, there is little evidence that the impact of establish sociodemographic determinants of premarital childbearing has altered greatly over time.

Mate availability and the transition to unwed motherhood: a paradox of population structure
Article Abstract:
Mate availability paradoxically affects the transition of young women to marriage and parenthood. Increase in the availability of partners leads to marriage among White women, reducing their chances of becoming unwed mothers. However, the large availability of eligible males shows a rise in the chances of unmarried parenthood. Transition to marriage increases among Black women with a rise in the availability of employed mates. However, premarital birth is influenced by the number of males in secondary schools.
