Patterns of parental independence giving to adolescents: variations by race, age, and gender of child
Article Abstract:
Race, age and gender of a child predict the parental independence-giving to adolescents in the United States. Older adolescents are given more independence, and girls in late adolescence are given more freedom outside home. Anglo adolescents are given more independence to explore and develop autonomy, as compared to African Americans and Hispanics. Anglo culture in the United States values independence within the family, as well as across other social institutions. However, African American and Hispanic communities are more patriarchal.

Racial and ethnic differences in the desire to marry
Article Abstract:
A study by the Department of Sociology of the State University of New York at Albany used 1987-88 data from 2,000 respondents in the National Survey of Families and Households to reveal gender, racial, and ethnic differences in the expressed desire to marry. Blacks desire marriage less than whites, though the racial difference is greater for men than for women. Racial differences among women are primarily because of education attained, while those among black and white men are primarily because of anticipated advantages of marriage.

Race differences in attitudinal and motivational factors in the decision to marry
Article Abstract:
A study by the Department of Sociology, Western Washington University, used 1987-88 data of the National Survey of Families and Households, covering 13,017 adults, to confirm the estimates of restricted marriage market models, and negate the belief that black women are opposed to marriage or see it as economically disadvantageous. The lower marriage rates among black women is possibly because of their reluctance to marry someone with uncertain economic resources.
