Rethinking family decision making: a family decision making model under constraints on time and information
Article Abstract:
Research on family decision processes needs to take into account the complex decision context. Factors include: multiple decision makers, including other organizations involved in a decision; limited access to information; unpredictability and uncertainty; and the effects of individual and family decision making styles. A model which takes these factors into account is presented, along with examples of applications in the context of an employment decision (early retirement options) and health decision (medical treatment options). Some suggestions for a decision support system are offered.

Adolescents' contributions to family decision making
Article Abstract:
The family environment is an important place for adolescents to develop critical thinking and decision making skills. Data from a three year study of adolescent and parental perceptions of the family decision making process are presented. The study focused on 11-13 year old adolescents' perception of involvement in decision making, family decision making styles, locus of control and critical thinking skills. One finding was that teens who believe they have control over outcomes also believe that their families encourage them to take an active role in decision making.
