Stepfamily as project

Article Abstract:

Three patterns of behavior emerged in an analysis of the behavior of the members of stepfamily households, using data from a study of 63 persons living in such households in Oslo, Norway. One pattern involves a reconstruction of what they had in the previous marriage, with the nuclear family as the ideal. In another pattern, members adopt a wait-and-see stance as they try different kinds of behavior to determine what fits them best. The third pattern reflects innovation, with members wanting to create something different from what they had in the previous marriage.

Confronting nuclear family bias in stepfamily research

Article Abstract:

Researchers need to assess stepfamilies and steprelationships outside the bounds of the nuclear family model, if the stepfamily experience is to be accurately represented. Steprelationships are often viewed as attempts to replicate child-parent relationships in nuclear families. This requires shifting to a normative adaptive perspective from a deficit-comparison approach. Three concepts in examining the stepfamily are proposed to acknowledge the perspectives of stepfamily members and analyze their experiences of stepfamily life.

What phenomenon is family?

Article Abstract:

A method for defining a family from the individual's perspective is presented. The method is designed to determine the persons that an individual considers as his or her family, how the individual perceives his or her relationships with those family members and how emotionally close or distant are the members. It is divided into three steps, namely a family list, a family map and a verbal interview.
