Tellings and retellings
Article Abstract:
Views and assumptions of Salvador Minuchin on how social constructionist, narrative and postmodern ideas have influenced the practice of family therapy invite comments. His belief that the family is the place where young children build their own personalities based on their interaction with family members is an oversimplication of reality. Children learn about life not just in their homes but in a larger environment that includes day care centers, religious institutions and hospitals. Minuchin is also wrong in his assumption that a child's problem is always rooted in the family.

In search of the lost family: a footnote to Minuchin's essay
Article Abstract:
Views and assumptions of Salvador Minuchin on how social constructionist, narrative and postmodern ideas have influenced the practice of family therapy invite comments. Minuchin is correct in his observation that the thrust of family therapy has shifted from being interpersonal towards being individual centered. However, Minuchin is corrects in assuming that post modernism is one of the factors that reshaped the practice of family therapy. Post modernist family therapists still consider the family as the central force in influencing children's reality construction and change.

A question of perspective
Article Abstract:
Views and generalizations made by Salvador Minuchin on the effects of social constructionist, narrative and postmodern approaches to family therapy invite comment. His assumption that the concept of the family is lost in narrative therapy with the use of postmodern and solution-focused approaches is inaccurate. On the contrary, the family has remained the central force considered that affects larger cultural systems.
