A father realizes that the arguments his five-year-old son starts with him represent assertions of the boy's identity. The father believes that arguments help the pair develop a deep relationship and teach his son that ideas have a legitimacy of their own.

A mother describes giving her daughter her childhood diary to read after they had their first real fight. Reading her mother's thoughts and experiences helped the girl to realize that she was not alone in sometimes hating her parents.

Writing games can help young children to get practice in forming letters. Adding writing to a picture collage is a good activity for ages four to seven. Other games for this age group and for ages six to nine are described.
