The stress of caring for a parent: effects of the elder's impairment on an employed, adult child
Article Abstract:
Researchers examined the effects of impairment in an elderly parent on stress levels in their adult, employed, caregiving children. The survey of 1,585 employees revealed that cognitive-behavioral problems in the elderly parent creates more caregiver stress than impairment which affects daily living activities. The study also revealed that daughters experience more caregiver stress than sons, that stress is less when the elderly parent is able to give some help to the caregiver, and that there is an association between taking time off from work to help the parent and caregiver stress.
